Dr. Lienhardt is an Infectious Disease specialist and a Clinical Epidemiologist, presently based in Dakar, Senegal. He is the coordinator of the newly set-up Tuberculosis Research Programme, located within the AIDS and related diseases Research Unit (UR 36) at the "Institut de Recherche pour le Développement" (IRD).  After graduating from the Medical School in Strasbourg (france) in 1980, he spent several years doing clinical work in the Hospital of Mulhouse and then worked in relief and development work with Non-Governmental Organisations in Middle-East and Africa. After an MSc Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1990, he joined the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Unit, where he carried out research projects on leprosy for 3 years. He then continued his work on leprosy at the Institut Marchoux in Bamako, Mali, where he contributed to clinical trials and research projects and leprosy-related neuritis and disabilities. Then, in late 1995, he joined the MRC Laboratories in The Gambia (West Africa), where he was part of a multi-disciplinary team working on tuberculosis. In late 1999, he joined IRD in Dakar, where he developed several research projects on tuberculosis, spanning from basic to operational research, including research projects on TB/HIV and trials for new treatment of TB and new TB vaccines, in collaboration with several teams in Europe and Africa.
