Dr Brian Ward completed his MDCM at McGill University in 1980 with subsequent training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1985-1991) and in microbiology at McGill (1992). He also holds a MSc from Oxford University (1980) and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the University of London (1985). Dr Ward is a Rhodes Scholar (Corpus Christi 1977) and is a recent recipient of the US Secretary of Defense Exceptional Public Service Award (2004). Dr Ward is currently chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at McGill University, associate director of the Tropical Diseases Center and director of the Canadian Reference Center for Parasitology.

 

He has served or continues to serve on a number of Canadian and international advisory committees in the areas of vaccine use, vaccine safety, tropical medicine and international health: among others the Canadian Advisory Committees on Immunization (1991-2001) and Causality Assessment (1993-2002: chair 1998-2002) as well as the US Anthrax Vaccine Evaluation Committee (1998-2003) and National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine Vaccine Safety Review (2000- present). Since 1999, Dr Ward has chaired the Canadian Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel.

 

Dr Ward has active research interests in measles, vaccine development and evaluation, parasitology and international health. He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 14 reviews/book chapters. His principle contribution to the literature to date has been in the area of measles immunization and post-vaccination immunity.
