Matthew E. Falagas, MD, MSc was born in 1962 in Palamas, Karditsa, Greece. He is a graduate of Athens University, School of Medicine, Athens, Greece (MD) and Harvard University, School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts (MSc in Epidemiology). He trained in Internal Medicine at State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, New York and Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts. He also trained in Infectious Diseases at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is certified in Internal Medicine (1993) and Infectious Diseases (1996) by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

 

He is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, President, Board of Directors, Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences (AIBS), Athens, Greece, and Director, Infectious Diseases Clinic of Henry Dunant Hospital, Athens, Greece.

 

Dr. Falagas is the author of more than 120 original peer-reviewed papers, reviews, and editorials (published or in press). His work has been cited in about 800 papers published in journals indexed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). He is co-editor of the “5-minute Infectious Diseases Consult” book and the “Guidelines for Infectious Diseases in Primary Care” handbook and author of 7 chapters in other textbooks. His research interests include polymyxins, antimicrobial resistance, nosocomial infections, cytomegalovirus infections, infections in immunosuppressed patients, and estimates and determinants of research productivity.

 

He is a member of the Education Committee of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). He has organized several national and international educational courses including the 3rd ESCMID School, Athens, Greece. He has been invited to give lectures in several international and national conferences including the European Conference of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID).

 

Dr. Falagas is a member of several professional societies including IDSA, ASM, ESCMID, HIV Medicine Association, and Massachusetts Medical Society. He has served as peer-reviewer in several journals including Clinical Infectious Diseases, Chest, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, BMC Infectious Diseases, PharmacoEconomics, Pediatrics International, American Journal of Managed Care, and Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research.

 

Dr. Falagas has received several honors and awards including the 1st Pan-Hellenic prize in Mathematics, top 1% of the class in Medical School, House Staff award for Excellence in Teaching by the Medical Student Body of State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, New York, Edward Kass award for Clinical Excellence by the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society, Research award by the Amfiaraion Foundation for the Study of Chemotherapeutic Agents, and Maxwell Finland award for Excellence in Research by the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society.
